Tuning mechanical metastability in FeMnCo medium entropy alloys and a peek into deformable hexagonal close-packed martensite

چکیده

We report here the compositional dependency of face-centered cubic (FCC) to hexagonal close-packed (HCP) martensitic transformation in FeMnCo medium entropy alloys (MEAs) and insights into underlying mechanisms. To this end, we designed MEAs with same Fe-to-Mn ratio explored phase stability therein. Higher Co content was found facilitate FCC-HCP kinetics. In situ electron backscatter diffraction studies underpinned an FCC-HCP-(new)FCC chain its atomistic mechanisms were directly via aberration-corrected scanning transmission microscopy.

A Criterion for Topological Close-Packed Phase Formation in High Entropy Alloys

The stability of topological close-packed (TCP) phases were found to be well related to the average value of the d-orbital energy level ( Md ) for most reported high entropy alloys (HEAs). Excluding some HEAs that contain high levels of the elements aluminum and vanadium, the results of this study indicated that the TCP phases form at Md > 1.09. This criterion, as a semi-empirical method, can p...

High pressure synthesis of a hexagonal close-packed phase of the high-entropy alloy CrMnFeCoNi

High-entropy alloys, near-equiatomic solid solutions of five or more elements, represent a new strategy for the design of materials with properties superior to those of conventional alloys. However, their phase space remains constrained, with transition metal high-entropy alloys exhibiting only face- or body-centered cubic structures. Here, we report the high-pressure synthesis of a hexagonal c...

The Strength of Binary Junctions in Hexagonal Close-Packed Crystals

A comparative study of non-coplanar binary dislocation junctions in magnesium (Mg) and beryllium (Be) is presented to examine the effects of elastic properties and active Burgers vectors on junction formation and destruction in hexagonal close-packed (hcp) crystals via discrete dislocation dynamics simulations. Two junction configurations formed at intersecting prismatic ð01 10Þ=basal ð0001Þ pl...

Dislocation Dynamics Simulations of Junctions in Hexagonal Close-Packed Crystals

The formation and strength of dislocations in the hexagonal closed packed material beryllium are studied through dislocation junctions and the critical stress required to break them. Dislocation dynamics calculations (using the code ParaDiS) of junction maps are compared to an analytical line tension approximation in order to validate our model. Results show that the two models agree very well....

Thermodynamics of hexagonal-close-packed iron under Earth’s core conditions

The free energy and other thermodynamic properties of hexagonal-close-packed iron are calculated by direct ab initio methods over a wide range of pressures and temperatures relevant to the Earth’s core. The ab initio calculations are based on density-functional theory in the generalized-gradient approximation, and are performed using the projector augmented wave approach. Thermal excitation of ...
